Obituary of Philip A. Sheridan

Reverend Philip A. Sheridan, 98 passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at his home in Trumbull. Born in Bridgeport on September 25, 1926, he was the son of the late Arthur and Cora (Martin) Sheridan. During his early education, Fr. Sheridan attended St. Charles Borromeo and St, Augustine Schools in Bridgeport, and later attended Fairfield Preparatory School in Fairfield starting when the school opened in 1942. Having discerned a call to Priesthood he entered St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield in 1944, and completed his studies at St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, NY in 1951.

Father Sheridan was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Hartford on May 3, 1951, by the late Most. Reverend Henry J. O'Brien, then Bishop of Hartford. His first assignment was as the assistant at St. Bernard in Sharon. He also served as assistant at St. Joseph in Bristol; St. James in Rocky Hill; SS. Peter and Paul in Waterbury; and St. Mary in Windsor Locks. In 1971 he was named Pastor of St. Lawrence O'Toole in Hartford and later was named Co-Pastor and Administrator at St. Bridget in Manchester, Our Lady of Assumption in Woodbridge, and Pastor at St. Mary in Union City. Father Sheridan served on the Priestly Formation Program at Holy Apostles Seminary from which he earned a Master of Divinity Degree.

Following his retirement in 1998, Father Sheridan moved to Trumbull to live with his dear devoted late sister, Ms. Mary Jane Sheridan. He had a passion for reading, and enjoyed sharing stories about his family, faith, and the people in his life that meant so much to him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made it a point to make you smile during any interaction with him. He was a good listener; he was guided by his resolve to be kind and concerned about others, especially those in need. After his retirement, he helped with sacramental ministry in several local parishes, was a mentor and spiritual father to many, and forged countless lasting friendships that will be missed dearly. He is survived by several cousins and many friends.

Friends are invited to meet directly at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St Trumbull on Friday, February 28, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by the Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne, Archbishop of Hartford. Entombment will follow in the St. Monica Mausoleum of Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. At Father's request, there will be no calling hours.
