Obituary of James Mas, Jr.
James Mas, Jr., age 88, of Shelton passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Scappatura) Mas. Born in White Plains, NY on January 15, 1937, and raised in Bridgeport, he was a son of the late Jaime and Carmen (Sendra) Mas, Sr. Mr. Mas was a graduate of Bassick High School and later attended the American Institute of Banking as well as Fairfield University where he completed many courses in banking. He began his long banking career at Connecticut National Bank, where he built many friendships over the years. Subsequently, Mr. Mas was the founder, president and CEO of the Valley Bank & Trust. He was a past president of the Algonquin Club, Brownson Country Club, the Exchange Club of Shelton, as well as past director of the American Bankers Association of CT and the Shelton/Derby Boys & Girls Club. Mr. Mas was the owner of Center Services in Shelton and was a former managing partner and owner of the Huntington Shopping Plaza.
His greatest enjoyment was found in the time he spent surrounded by his family. He was an avid golfer, loved music, and watching old movies. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his beloved wife Joan of 67 years, other survivors include his loving children, James Mas III and his wife Janice, Lori Lodice and her husband Chris and Lisa Mas and her husband Robert Terentieff, all of Shelton. He his also survived by cherished grandchildren, Chris Lodice and his wife Brandi, Jordan Kropiewnicki and her husband Norbert, Cameron Mas, James Mas, and Robert Terentieff as well as his adored great grandchildren, Stella Lodice, Gabriella Kropiewnicki and Cecilia Kropiewnicki. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jack and Fred Mas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton. A springtime burial in Huntington Lawn Cemetery, Shelton will be held at a later date.
