George J. Forrest (to many "Poppy"), age 86, beloved husband of Victoria D'Onofrio Forrest of Monroe, CT, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Bridgeport Hospital with his loving family by his side. Born in Patterson, NJ on March 9, 1936, he was the son of the late George J. Forrest, Sr. and Marie Giannone Forrest Frank and was a longtime resident of Monroe.
George was a Korean War combat veteran and recipient of the purple heart. He served in the 1st Marine Division, forward RECON team. Upon his exit from the Marines he came to settle in Connecticut and lived with his late sister Joan and worked for Stone Brothers as a meat cutter. He then worked for FoodFair grocery stores where he worked his way up to store manager. He then advanced his career within the automotive business as a General Manager for Mercedes Benz of Fairfield and North Haven Connecticut for over 40 years. During that time George was highly accomplished and received numerous achievement awards and recognized as one of the most outstanding General Managers on the east coast.
George retired at the age of 73 and during those years he enjoyed golf and was a lifetime member of Whitney Farms in Monroe, CT. George spent time at his homes in CT and FL and enjoyed building projects, gardening and became a master craftsman. Florida was his peaceful retreat where he enjoyed playing golf and cruising around in his golf cart which proudly displays the American and Marine flags.
He had many interests and many stories to share with anyone who would listen to him. He made friends everywhere he went and was always there to lend a helping hand, never asking for anything in return. George was a passionate sports fan and loved to talk NY Giants and Yankees with his sons.
George lived a long, happy, and healthy life and was a true giver. George was loved by many and will be remembered for his funny humor and easygoing personality. He was an inspiration to everyone that knew him by his kindness, wisdom and selflessness. George loved his family, was always patient and gave great advice.
In addition to his beloved wife Victoria of 64 years, survivors include his three loving children, Gregory Forrest and his wife Debra of Portsmouth, RI, Jeffrey Forrest and his wife Leah of Bloomfield, CT and Jill Esposito and her husband Ken of Newtown, CT, eight grandchildren, Nicole Kennedy (Michael), Danielle Errickson (Tyler), Mercedes Forrest (Tyler Woodward) Gregory Forrest II, Austin Ryan (Katharine Johnson), Marissa Esposito, Frank Esposito, Conor Cahill, and three great grandchildren Henry, Oliver, and Jones, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Joan Fitzgerald and a grandson, Forrest Ryan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 25, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Jude Church, 707 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery, Monroe. Friends may greet the family on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
