Obituary of Mary S. Gerics

Mary Spodnik Gerics, age 92, of Trumbull, beloved wife of the late Joseph G. Gerics, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bridgeport, on June 23, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Tomascak Spodnik.

Mary grew up in Bridgeport and graduated from Sts. Cyril and Methodius Commercial High.  She worked at the Frisbee Pie Company prior to meeting Joseph Gerics, the love of her life. In 1949 they were married and together raised a family of six.  Mary was a member and officer of St. Joseph Society Branch 19, First Catholic Slovak Union, and the choir and Friendship Club at St. Catherine of Siena.  "Baba" loved to play cards, particularly pinochle with her children and grandchildren.  But most of all she loved spending time with her family and had close relationships with all of them.

Mary was the driving force of the family and strove to have her children and grandchildren have greater opportunities in education and in life. She was the glue that kept the family together.  Everyone was always welcome in her home, and while she could often be found in the kitchen singing while cooking, it was at the kitchen table where she was always ready to listen with an open heart and an abundance of love.

Survivors include six loving children, Joseph Gerics and his wife Susan, Gregory Gerics and his wife Kathryn, Robert Gerics, Mary Anne Levin and her husband Gary, David Gerics, and Joanne Lorys and her husband Robert; 12 grandchildren: Joseph A. Gerics (Karina), Kristina Gerics (Mike), David and Matthew Gerics, Nicole Hisler (Pram), Michael Levin (Dana) and Richard Levin (Selina), Tara, Cindy, Meredith, Renee and Robert Lorys; ten great-grandchildren, a sister Theresa Kuruc, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings, Margaret, Anthony and John.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull and at 11:00 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Trumbull for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. On Friday relatives and friends may greet the family from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In addition, immediately after the interment on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., the family will host a memorial celebration of Mary’s life at Tashua Knolls Restaurant (40 Tashua Knolls Lane, Trumbull).

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings made be made to the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Villa Sacred Heart, Danville, Pennsylvania 17821-1698.
