Obituary of Herman James Dawes

Herman James Dawes, age 90, of Monroe passed away peacefully on Friday October 6, 2017 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Janet P. Headley Dawes. Born in Ewarton, St. Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies on June 24, 1927, he was a son of the late James and Norah Thomas Dawes. A furniture maker by trade, he took great pride in his work and his specialty was fine finish carpentry. He was the owner and operator of the former Unity Builders before his retirement in 2006 after many years of dedicated service. A huge fan of the New York Yankees and avid dancer, he also found great enjoyment while traveling with his late wife. His greatest enjoyment, however, was found in the time he spent with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his loving children, Peter Dawes of Hartford, Pauline Richardson and her husband Anthony of Newport News, VA, Diana Dawes, Dudley James Dawes and his wife Tracy of Lakeland, FL, and Michael Dawes and his wife Taryn of Stratford, his brother, St. Ledger Dawes of the UK, as well as 15 grandchildren, over 19 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his beloved wife Janet, he was also predeceased by his grandchildren, Jamile Whittingham, Micah Richardson and Anabelle Dawes, his great granddaughter, Kha'Mani Barno and his brothers and sisters, Ethel Dawes, Lucille James, Edith Dawes, Leopold Dawes, Canute Dawes, Ivy Dawes, Victor Dawes, Lynette Smith and Ivan Dawes. Friends may greet the family at Cornerstone Christian Center, 349 Wheelers Farm Rd., Milford on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery, Monroe.
