Obituary of Louis F. Bogash

Louis F. Bogash, Jr., age 92, of Stratford and formerly of Bridgeport passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen Starincak Bogash. Born in Bridgeport, on June 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Louis Sr. and Rose Petrino Bogash. A veteran of World War II, Lou had served his country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corp. and also boxed on their team, where he developed his deep love for the sport. He became a popular boxing figure in Connecticut because of his work as a judge, referee and heading up the state's amateur organization for years. In 1987 he was honored as the CT Boxing Guild Man of the Year, having already refereed over 5000 rounds, including collegiate tournaments. In 1996, he was honored by the CT Sportswriters Alliance for helping restore and revitalize amateur boxing in Connecticut. Lou was inducted to the CT Boxing Hall of fame in 2008, following in his father's footsteps. He was also proud to have been a past president and member of the Greater Bridgeport Oldtimers Athletic Association for nearly 55 years. Louis retired from the former AVCO Lycoming, prior to that; he had been employed by the Bridgeport Brass Company for 37 years, where he worked in the security and safety department. Survivors include his daughter, Rosemarie Penna of Florida, a grandson, Louie Mackie and a son-in-law, Anthony Mackie. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his daughter, Christine Bogash Mackie. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dorothy Stoppel, for her care and compassion over the last several years and to Maria Iacoboni of Guilford, who was Lou's "adopted daughter" during his last months. Her love and selfless acts of compassion were examples to us all. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. directly in St. Andrew Church, 435 Anton St., Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Monday April 6, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Hospice, Inc. 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.
