Obituary of Helen J. Sorensen

Helen J. Alencynowicz Sorensen, age 94, of Shelton and formerly of Fairfield passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Andrew J. Sorensen, Jr. Born in Bridgeport on August 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Monika Michaelcevitz Alencynowicz. Helen grew up in the Roaring Twenties and during the Great Depression. She attended and graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport before later becoming employed by Chance Vought (now Sikorsky Aircraft) during World War II, where she worked in the blue print department on the designs and development of P-38 fighter planes. More recently, Helen had worked as an administrative assistant to Dr. James Garrity in Monroe for 25 years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and reading, but had a great affection for animals. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother who always looked forward to family visits. Her strong faith was evident in all that she did and she was a living example to all. Helen is survived by her children, Paula Finch and her husband Donald of Shelton, Kathryn Sorensen also of Shelton and James Sorensen and his wife Betsy of Easton, her six cherished grandchildren, Ted Finch and his wife Lisa of Shelton, David Finch and his wife Janice of Racine, WI, Kevin Finch and his wife Wendy of Stratford, Mary Savoie and her husband Jamie of Milford, Andrew (A.J.) Sorensen of Bridgeport and Alex Sorensen and his wife Meg of Wooster, MA, seven great grandchildren, Ryan, Adam and Brendan Finch, Abby Savoie, Travis and Tommy Finch and Quinn Sorensen. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. In addition to her husband Andrew, Helen was also predeceased by her sister, Stella Leas. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice Home Care for their kindness and compassion that was extended to them. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. directly in St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. Friends may call at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Shrine of Devine Mercy, 2 Prospect Hill Rd., Stockbridge, MA, 01263.
